Types Of Elbow Pipe Fittings

Malleable Iron Elbow
Malleable iron elbows are tough and can handle a lot of pressure and heat. These elbow fittings are often used in industrial pipe systems, making them perfect for things like water supply lines and gas pipelines. They’re built to last, so they work well even under tough conditions.

Pressed Elbow
Pressed elbows are made by pressing material into shape instead of welding. This makes them light but still strong! You’ll find these fittings in HVAC systems and home plumbing because they help keep fluid flow smooth with their nice, clean inside surfaces.

Stamped Welded Elbow
Stamped welded elbows are great for projects that need strong joints. The stamping process makes sure all the pieces fit together just right. That’s why they’re often used in heavy-duty applications where reliability matters a lot.

Welding Elbow
Welding elbows come in different materials and sizes to fit various uses. Depending on whether you’re using carbon steel or stainless steel, different welding methods might be needed. These elbows create strong joints and help prevent leaks, making them ideal for important piping tasks.

High Pressure Elbow
High-pressure elbows are made to take on extreme conditions found in industries like oil and gas. They usually use tough materials like alloy steels or high-grade stainless steels to stay durable under stress. When picking high-pressure elbows, really think about what your application needs so that you don’t run into problems later on.

The use and surface treatment of pipe fittings

01/

Anti-corrosion coating: Applying a layer of anti-corrosion paint, spraying, or coating with materials such as zinc on the surface of the pipe fittings to prevent corrosion.

02/

Galvanization: Steel pipe fittings are often hot-dip galvanized or electroplated to increase their corrosion resistance.

03/

Sandblasting: Removing oxide layers, oil stains, and other contaminants from the surface of pipe fittings by sandblasting to make it cleaner and more conducive for subsequent coating.

04/

Polishing: Polishing the surface of pipe fittings to improve smoothness and glossiness, enhancing the appearance.

05/

Hardening treatment: Some special pipe fittings may undergo surface hardening treatment to enhance wear resistance.

06/

Acid pickling: During production, pipe fittings are often acid pickled to make the surface smoother, free of oxide layers, and rust spots. Different materials, processes, and operating environments of pipe fittings require different surface treatment methods to ensure their performance and quality.

ELBOWS Manufacturing Process

Mandrel method (Hot Forming)

One of the most common Pipe Fittings Manufacturing process for manufacturing Elbows from the pipe is the mandrel method, a kind of hot forming method.
In this method, the pipe is cut into pieces and pushed with the help of a hydraulic ram. An induction heating coil heats the pipe, and it is pushed over a die called a “mandrel,” which allows the pipe to expand and bend simultaneously.
This method can be used to manufacture a wide range of the diameter of elbows.

Extrusion Method

In the cold extrusion method, a pipe with the same diameter as a finished product is pushed through a die and formed into its desired shape. Usually applied to stainless steel small to medium sizes elbows.

UO Method

UO method is used to manufacture the medium size of elbow, tee, and reducers. The plate is cut out into a specially designed shape, it is formed first into a U-shape using a die and then into an O-shape or tubular form using another die; that is why this method is known as the UO method.
Once the fittings are tumbler shaped, they are welded from inside and outside of the closing seam. A cut plate is 1st from in U shape and then in O shape.

Hot Forming Method

In a Hot Forming Die Bending method, a Pipe is heated to forming temperature & formed in the die with the specific shape, this process may be repeated as needed to obtain the required shape, size, and wall thickness. Usually applied to thick-wall items that cannot be bent on a mandrel die. You can learn about elbows in this article.

How Quality Testing Affects The Final Products Made Ss Tubes And Pipes

Flaring Test

The flaring test serves to establish the forming behaviors of tubes and pipes which are expanded to a specific degree with respect to O.D. This test is carried out in the confirmation of the international standards.

Flattening Test

A sample of tube or pipe in 4" the length shall be flattened cold between parallel plates in two steps. The weld shall be placed at 90° from the direction of the applied force. The first step is a test for ductility, no cracks or breaks on the inside surfaces are acceptable. During the second step, which is a test for soundness, the flattering shall be continued until the specimen breaks or the opposite walls of the specimen meet.

Tensile Test

The tensile test serves to determine the strength and ductile characteristics of the tube's pipes i.e., yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation.

Hardness Test

Samples from each lot of continuously heat-treated tube pipes are tested to ensure that the hardness is well within specified limits.

Eddy Current Test

This test is carried out to detect any micro-cracks or inhomogeneities in the material, by using the test procedure as described in ASTM E-426.

Reverse Band Test

A Sample of 4ft in length shall be split longitudinally 90 on each side of the weld. The sample shall then be opened and bent around a mandrel with a maximum thickness of four times the wall thickness, with the mandrel parallel to the weld and against the original outside surface of the tube. The weld shall be at the point of the maximum bend. There shall be no evidence of cracks or overlaps resulting from the reduction in thickness of the weld areas by cold working.

Applications of Elbow Fittings

FAQ

Q: Which material is used for elbows?

A: Brass is the best material for an elbow because it is strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion. Brass elbows are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install.

Q: What is the formula for elbow center pipe?

A: Elbow center = tan(angle/2) x 38.1 x diameter. The table lists the tan values for commonly used elbow angles from 30 to 90 degrees to simplify the elbow center calculation. An example calculation is provided for a 12" pipe with a 60 degree elbow which results in an elbow center of 263.80 mm.

Q: How to calculate area of pipe elbow?

A: You need to know the bend radius of the pipe R and the diameter of the pipe, 2r. A full torus is 360 degrees, so the surface area of the curved portion is (60/360) x (2•Pi•R) x (2•Pi•r).

Q: What is the angle of an elbow fitting?

A: The connections allow you to reroute regularly threaded pipes to turn corners or fit in limited space without the expense of buying a pipe bender. Standard elbows come in a few different angles – 45°, 90°, and, although they are less common, 22.5° angles – and can be made of the same materials as any other piping.

Q: What is a standard elbow?

A: Standard radius elbows are bent sections of rigid conduit that help in changing the direction of conduit. Available in plain end and belled end, standard radius elbows are available in a range of radii 22 1/2 to 90 degrees.

Q: What is the ASME code for elbow?

A: The ASME B16. 9 elbow is used when a pipe changes direction. Elbows can turn up, turn down, turn left, right, or any angle in between.
