A420 WPL6 Vs A234 WPB Elbows: How To Choose Low-Temperature Carbon Steel Fittings For The 2026 LNG Build-Out

Oct 09, 2026

Leave a message

TL;DRAn A420 WPL6 elbow is impact tested at -45°C (-50°F), while an A234 WPB elbow has no low-temperature impact requirement and suits service at or above -20°C. With four new LNG liquefaction projects reaching final investment decision in 2026, buyers should match elbow grade to minimum design temperature, not to price alone. This guide compares both grades, shows where stainless steel takes over, and ends with a five-step selection checklist.

LNG construction is moving fast. The IEA's Global LNG Capacity Tracker lists four final investment decisions between January and October 2026: CP2 Phase 2, Commonwealth LNG, Delfin LNG and LNG Canada Phase 2. Together they add almost 46 bcm/yr of liquefaction capacity.

Each terminal needs thousands of butt weld elbows, and many sit on lines far colder than ordinary process piping. A fitting that performs well at 20°C can fail by brittle fracture at -40°C.

So buyers keep asking us one question: when is A234 WPB enough, and when must the order switch to A420 WPL6? Here is a direct answer from the carbon steel elbow line at Tianjin Baode Steel.

What Makes an A420 WPL6 Elbow Different from Ordinary Carbon Steel?

ASTM A420 WPL6 is a low-temperature carbon steel grade for pressure piping. Baode's A420 WPL6 elbow is made from ASTM A333 Gr.6 seamless pipe, formed by hot push or cold press, and built to ASME B16.9 dimensions.

Composition is tightly controlled: carbon ≤0.30% with very low sulfur and phosphorus. Normalizing, or normalizing plus tempering, gives the fine grain that resists brittle fracture.

✦

-45°C impact test

Charpy V-notch testing at -45°C (-50°F) confirms toughness where WPB turns brittle.

✦

485 / 275 MPa

Minimum tensile strength 485 MPa and minimum yield strength 275 MPa.

✦

-45°C to +300°C

Applicable temperature band for WPL6 butt weld elbows.

✦

1/2"–48", Sch10–Sch80

45° and 90° elbows, long or short radius, butt weld ends.

A420 WPL6 vs A234 WPB vs Stainless WP304L: Which Elbow Fits Which Temperature?

Three grades cover most cold-service decisions. The table shows how they differ on the points that decide a purchase order.

Item A420 WPL6 A234 WPB A403 WP304L
Material type Low-temperature carbon steel Carbon steel Austenitic stainless steel
Low-temperature impact test Charpy V-notch at -45°C None required Austenitic structure stays tough when cold
Service temperature -45°C to +300°C At or above -20°C Specified for lines near LNG temperature (about -162°C)
Typical role Cold carbon steel lines, ethylene/propylene plants, air separation Ordinary water, steam, oil and gas piping Liquid-LNG-temperature and corrosive service

Mind the limit: WPL6 is rated to -45°C. Liquid LNG itself is about -162°C (-260°F), so those lines are typically specified in austenitic stainless steel such as WP304L or WP316L. Use WPL6 for the cold carbon steel lines around the liquefaction

train.

ASTM A234 WPB carbon steel butt weld elbow for standard-temperature service

A234 WPB is the workhorse for room and medium temperature service at or above -20°C, at a lower price, with no low-temperature impact requirement.

Choose it for ordinary pipelines. Do not push it below its limit to save cost: our stainless steel elbow range, including WP316L butt weld elbows, covers colder duty.

How to Select an A420 WPL6 Elbow in 5 Steps

Mandrel hot forming method for low temperature carbon steel elbow production

In push forming, an induction coil heats the pipe and a hydraulic ram drives it over a mandrel, so it expands and bends in one pass. Baode runs 3 elbow pushing machines for 1/2"–24" seamless elbows, plus 6 tee forming machines and 10 presses for reducers and caps. See the production equipment.

1Fix the minimum design metal temperature. At or above -20°C, WPB may be enough. From -20°C down to -45°C, specify WPL6. Colder than that, move to stainless.

2Match pipe and flanges. WPL6 elbows are usually paired with A333 Gr.6 pipe and A350 LF2 flanges, so the whole line shares low-temperature toughness.

3Pick angle and radius. Choose 45° or 90°. Long radius (1.5D) gives smoother flow; short radius suits tight layouts.

4Set size and wall thickness. Baode supplies 1/2"–48" in Sch10–Sch80 to ASME B16.9.

5Ask for test records and a coating. Request Charpy results at -45°C for each heat, then choose sand blasting plus paint, hot-dip galvanizing or FBE coating.

FAQ: What Buyers Ask Most About A420 WPL6 Elbows

Q. What is the lowest service temperature of an A420 WPL6 elbow?

Baode's A420 WPL6 elbows are designed for -45°C (-50°F) and are Charpy V-notch impact tested at that temperature. The applicable range is -45°C to +300°C.

Q. Can an A234 WPB elbow replace A420 WPL6 on a cold-climate pipeline?

Only if the minimum design temperature stays at or above about -20°C. WPB has no low-temperature impact requirement, so below that level the line should use WPL6 or another impact-tested grade. Confirm the final choice against your project specification.

Q. Is A420 WPL6 suitable for liquid LNG at -162°C?

No. WPL6 is rated to -45°C, well above the temperature of liquid LNG. Liquid-LNG lines are typically specified in austenitic stainless steel such as WP304L or WP316L, while WPL6 serves colder-than-ambient carbon steel lines.

Q. Which pipe and flange grades pair with A420 WPL6 elbows?

WPL6 elbows are usually matched with ASTM A333 Gr.6 seamless pipe and A350 LF2 flanges. Baode makes its own WPL6 elbows from A333 Gr.6 seamless pipe.

Q. What sizes, MOQ and coatings does Baode offer for A420 WPL6 elbows?

45° and 90° elbows in long and short radius, 1/2"–48", Sch10–Sch80, to ASME B16.9. The MOQ is 1 piece. Surface options are sand blasting then painting, hot-dip galvanizing or FBE coating, packed in a wooden box, on a wooden pallet or bare.

The rule of thumb is simple: let the minimum design temperature choose the grade. WPB covers ordinary service, WPL6 covers cold carbon steel lines down to -45°C, and stainless takes over near LNG temperature.
