Difference between long radius and short radius of elbows
The main differences between the long radius and short radius of an elbow are reflected in the curvature radius, performance, and application scenarios.
Different curvature radii:
The curvature radius of a long radius elbow is 1.5 times the outer diameter of the pipe, i.e. R=1.5D.
The curvature radius of a short radius elbow is equal to the outer diameter of the pipe, that is, R=D. This difference is evident in the appearance and size of the elbow, with long radius elbows being longer than short radius elbows.
Performance differences:
Due to its larger bending radius, long radius elbows exhibit lower wear, erosion force, and resistance during use. This makes long radius elbows perform better in high-pressure, high-speed fluid or solid transport pipelines.
Short radius elbows have relatively high wear and resistance due to their small bending radius. Therefore, it is more common in low-pressure fluids or situations with limited size.
Different application scenarios:
Long radius elbows are commonly used in high-pressure, high-speed, or solid conveying pipelines to reduce wear, erosion, and resistance. In industries such as petrochemicals and power, long radius elbows are widely used due to their excellent performance.
Short radius elbows are mainly used for low-pressure fluids or in situations where installation space is limited. For example, in areas where the pipeline layout is compact or space saving is required, short radius elbows can provide better flexibility and adaptability.
